24,000 people sign Foxglove and 38 Degrees petition to ban harmful data centres in 48 hours!
Foxglove has teamed up with political petition specialists 38 Degrees to put forward a petition to UK prime minister Andy Burnham asking him to ban harmful data centres.
Within 48 hours, more than 24k people have signed it. To join them, hit the button below now:
We need to keep up the pressure on our elected leaders because of the scale of what’s coming. Around 315 data centres are queuing to connect to the UK grid – around 73GW of demand, almost twice the electricity the whole country uses at peak times in winter.
Two planned sites alone, Wapseys Wood and Quest Park, according to their planning documents, could produce more than 4.5 million tonnes of UK carbon emissions a year between them. That’s more than the entire UK emissions of US oil and gas giant ExxonMobil.
More than 9,000 Foxglove supporters have signed our petition to tell the prime minister to rule out new gas power stations for data centres. That’s an amazing start on the specific, urgent demand about gas.
We’ve teamed up with 38 Degrees now to launch this new petition which still calls for a ban on fossil-fuelled data centres, but also sets out the basic rules that every new data centre should have to meet.
With 38 Degrees behind it, we can reach far more people than Foxglove are able to on our own. More than 20,000 people have signed it already.
Don’t worry, your signature on the gas petition still counts, and we’ll make sure the Prime Minister hears it. But if you sign both petitions, it will let people know the strength of feeling in the country to set out fair rules to protect our communities and environment from new Big Tech data centres – particularly on banning any new gas to power them.
